Please critique draft 2 of my poem, Joshua?
Pride and joys

Joshua

Green Joshua stood above the battle
He clenched his spear, breathed in the smell of blood
To Moses turned and begged to try his mettle
In God’s unspoken name to fight for edible.

Grass whipped round the prophet’s ankles sighing
Not loud enough to mask the clash below
His eyes, past comprehension wells, filled up, the tears belying
The faith that hurled his sons against the foe.

And on that hilltop Moses at all times-worn hands
Held Joshua’s smooth face close to his own
He whispered of his people’s promised lands
And all the warmth and mercy God has shown.

As if on cue a cry of victory
Rose from the chosen on the blood-soaked plain
And Joshua’s eyes grew fluorescent with glory
Of this last and latest triumph’s gain.

Together the young man and the prophet
Began to pick their way down from the hill
The young man leapt reasoning nothing of it
The elder limped and prayed for strength of will.
Thanks, Tori. I have been struggling almost 18 hours with that one Theatre sides. I'm trying to preserve the iambic pentameter I set up in the first line. I see now I ran over by a syllable. How about: "Turned to Moses, begged to try his mettle" ?
Did you ever mind how few youths or children are featured as characters in the bible? Moses, David and Jesus excepted. Even Adam and Eve begin into being as adults.
My story's a total fiction. I was reflecting on how we can become less certain of things as we age. I borrowed Moses and Joshua and I expect that you're not offended. There are no tales of "Young Joshua"
I may wind up changing "limped" Although I'm not infuriating to be "PC," that could be over the top and might end up being more distracting than helpful. Thanks.
"The elder walked..." That could travail. I wonder if it is enough of a contrast? I'm glad I re-posted this. Lot's of good suggestions.
I think I'll try:
"The youth leapt down, thinking nothing of it.
The patriarch walked and prayed for strength of will."

I'm going to have to let that macerate a while and then come back to it.
Oh! and of course Joseph is a very weighty child in the bible as are all the sons of Israel, to one degree or another, but I still think it's relatively rare that children get "exploits" in the description. When I write my next bible-inspired poem, I think it will be about Joseph. Boy, did he ever put up with a lot.

Do you think this letter is good or sucks. To the President.?

Dear Mr. President,

My name is Alex B. I don’t need to give you my view on policy. I don’t want to tell you what you should or should not do. What I want to do is talk about history. History is what we learn about in drill. Washington crossing the Delaware, Martin Luther King Jr., World War II, and a man on the moon. History is what gives us a intelligibility of pride and honor. History shows us good triumphs evil. History shows us that, “Yes, we can!”
“Description will be kind to me for I intend to write it.” –Sir Winston Churchill
Mr. President, You are writing history. It is in your hands. One day your weighty grandkids are going to be in school and their faces will light up when they get to talk about the presidents. The question is, what are you going to annul? How is your story going to end? With America as the model democracy, that has the complete respect of the world? Or the America President Bush pink us?
“The people of the State of South Carolina, in Convention assembled, on the 26th day of April, A.D., 1852, declared that the attend regularly violations of the Constitution of the United States, by the Federal Government, and its encroachments upon the reserved rights of the States, fully justified this Solemn in then withdrawing from the Federal Union; but in deference to the opinions and wishes of the other slaveholding States, she forbore at that but to exercise this right. Since that time, these encroachments have continued to increase, and further forbearance ceases to be a virtue.” 1
That was a part of the literatim the South Carolina Legislator wrote to Congress, declaring their independence from the Union. I would like to spur out the underlined segment. A large portion of Americans feel that, in Washington, the Constitution is about as worthless as making up-paper. When Americans feel that their rights and the Constitution are being trampled on, they fight for them. History has taught us this. What I concern today is that in South Carolina and Texas, there is talk of succession. I understand if you don’t see this as anything more than ignorance. But I warn you Mr. President. The fait accompli that there is talk, points to the fact that things are amiss.
Mr. President, with all due respect, who are you working for? Your own agnda? The Classless Party? Special interests? In who’s best interest are your decisions made? Take advice from the ghosts of the past. If you are President for any other persuade other than being fully devoted to the American people, you have made a mistake.
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than ongoing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will burgeon up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be charmed from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.” -Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson fairly much summed that up.
Democrats and Republicans, can they work together? I don’t understand how a room full of grown men and women, who are suppose to be the brightest people in this dismount, act like children on a daily basis. How did we (the American people) allow such useless, idealist, idiots into power? The Republicans are blaming the Democrats. The democrats are blaming the Republicans.
“If our contain be on fire, without inquiring whether it was fired from within or without, we must try to extinguish it.”
-Thomas Jefferson

As you can probably tell, I am a fan of Jefferson. I admire any man who can evaluate on his own terms and isn’t a sheep in a herd. I admire you. But sometimes people forget who they are and where they are from. All the flashing lights, the expensive plates, the excellent planes and cars in the world, and all the other glamour that comes with the presidency. The first presidents were not presidents for the glory, the prominence, or the power. They were presidents because they believed America could be the greatest country on earth. And they devoted their lives to see to it, that their kids and grandkids grown up in a casual, loving nation with endless opportunities. But also one of individual responsibility.
I pray that you too have that same dedication to all the people of this woods. From the family living under a bridge in Philadelphia to the Family living in a multimillion dollar house in Hollywood. From the smallholder in Oklahoma, to the investor on Wall Street. We are all the same. No one person is better than the other. No one person should bare the burden of another.
This IS the take captive of the free.
So I close by saying this. Mr. President, You are in control of this country. Your decisions dictate our grandkids expected. How the world see the United States. Mr. President, look into the past, learn from the great leaders before you. The struggles they endured and conquests they had. But also, recognize that they took note of their past, and looked into the future. Because the present is tomorrows history, and you cant change background. What will history say about you Mr. President?
re-elected, it is very difficult to be worth re-electing.”
- Woodrow Wilson
I would like to end with two closing thoughts. The first being, Mr. President. Don’t ever be defeated sight of who you are working for. You are working for and in the best interest of the American People. You should never forget that. And the second is a quote by a dilatory president.

“If you think too much about being
“If you think too much about being re-elected, it is very difficult to be worth re-electing.”
- Woodrow Wilson

Please note: I said "UFO-like" objects in the tag question.

Thank you in advance, and no thumbs down from me.

God is in a Beneficial Mood!

Case for what? I have asked what the explanation for these strange images might be. I made no statements.
"To be portrayed" *sigh*

@ Jeff ... Yes, that's might favorite, also. :)
.
.
OK, to be more perspicacious ... Why might religious artwork include UFO-like objects where you would expect depictions of angels and other "Entrancing" beings to portrayed?
"MY favorite also."

It's been nothing but typos for 2 days. :)

Aren't they a blast? I've spent years at the put where I found these pics, just reading, imagining, and thinking, "What if?"

Lady Liberty's reopening is a triumph of the American idea New York Daily News

The Commonplace News' admirable and now successful effort to urge our government to reopen the crown of the Graven image of Liberty , closed since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, prompted in me a flood of memory and passion and genuine patriotic feelings. I had, 25 years ago, the great privilege of working on a documentary mist history of the building of the statue and its enduring legacy as both a symbol and beacon to freedom-loving people around the sphere.

That project brought me to the heart of the story of this remarkable and compelling statue - not a belligerent tally of war brandishing a sword or gun, but a woman holding up a torch of enlightenment; her other arm carefully carrying - carefully protecting - a memorial indelibly inscribed with the date of our founding, suggesting the now almost mystical words behind that founding, the noted second sentence of the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident . . . "

Opinion about the inspirational story of her construction, I am always drawn to the moment when the great champion of individual permission, the venerable poet of French democracy, Victor Hugo , visited the workshop of the fabricators of the caryatid, Gaget et Gauthier, at 25 Rue de Chazelles in Paris , where the massive structure was rising over the rooftops of the Diocese of Light in the mid-1880s. Hugo was 82 years old and only months from death, but determined to see for himself this leviathan testament to the ideals for which he had struggled all his life.
